To celebrate the launch of her new book Dear Dylan, Siobhan Curham will be running a poetry competition on her website

Entrants must be age 10 – 17 and the poems should be based on one of the following themes:

Friendship: Dear Dylan is the story of a friendship that begins online – in fact the whole novel is made up of emails between the two characters as their friendship grows. Perhaps you would like to write a poem about your own experience of friendship and how important your friends are to you.

Family: The main character in Dear Dylan, Georgie, hasn’t had the easiest family life. Her father died when she was little and she doesn’t get on with her step-dad at all. There is no denying that families can be very complicated. But they can also be full of love and good times. Maybe you would like to write a poem about your own experience of family life – good or bad, happy or sad…

Dreams: Georgie dreams of being an actress and the book follows her determination to pursue her dream, no matter what obstacles life – or her step-dad – throw at her. Do you have a burning dream or ambition? Would you like to write a poem about your pursuit of this dream, and the importance of never giving up?

Please send your submissions to: contact[AT]siobhancurham[DOT]co[DOT]uk by Monday 2nd April. And please give your name and age in your covering email.

The three winning entrants will each receive a signed copy of Dear Dylan and their poems will be published on her blog http://thefadedbookmark.blogspot.com/ in April as part of the official book launch celebrations.

This autumn The Booktrust is giving away 680,000 free copies of Eric Carle’s wonderful story book “Slowly, Slowly, Slowly,” Said the Sloth to reception class children in England. It means they will have given away more than 5 million books over the last four years.

To celebrate, they are offering primary schools and local libraries the chance to own an artist’s proof from “Slowly, Slowly, Slowly,” Said the Sloth, signed by Eric Carle. Just tell them where you think the proofs deserve to go! You can nominate one library and/or one primary school. Every eligible nomination will be entered into a prize draw and the winners selected at random. So the more nominations your school or library gets, the better their chance is of being drawn as a winner.

This is the final week of the draw, to nominate your school or library click here

Competition closes on Sunday 31st October.

The Booktrust is offering teenage reading groups in libraries a fantastic opportunity to report on this year’s Booktrust Teenage Prize. It would be great if you could pass on this information to any colleagues running teenage reading groups in your libraries.

To enter the competition, reading groups just need to tell us, in 300 words, why their reading group should be ‘reporters’ on this year’s Teenage Prize for Groupthing. The reporting will take place from September to November.

The winning reading group will receive a flip cam which can be used to produce short videos of reviews of the books, debates, and events to tie in with the Prize. They will also receive one set of books and three sets of tickets to attend the awards ceremony in November in London.* The videos will be shown on Groupthing and the Booktrust website.

Please submit your entries to judith-shipman@readingagency.org.uk by 5pm on Friday 20 August.

The winning reading group will be announced the week beginning 23 August, and the flip cam and books will be delivered to the reading group in time for the shortlist announcement on 7 September.
There will also be a set of books for the runners-up.

*Please note that travel expenses to the awards ceremony are not included.
